Orioles Magic Numbers Update: Sunday Sept 7 14 - NY Yankees 12 - Toronto Blue Jays 7 - Tampa Bay Rays 2 - Boston Red Sox The so-called magic number is the minimum number of combined Orioles wins and AL East division rival losses that will clinch the division title for the Orioles. Alternatively, the magic number can be interpreted as the combined number of Os wins and individual rival losses that, in effect, will eliminate the rival from the division title chase. Consider the case of the Yankees, with 73 wins and 22 games remaining: If the Yanks were to win all of their remaining games, their win total would be 95. The Orioles only need 14 wins to reach a win total of 96, which effectively eliminates the Yankees from the division race; hence, 14 is the Os magic number. One immediate takeaway from the chart above: In the remaining 21 games, if the Orioles finish 14-7. they will clinch the division no matter how many games the other teams win. [As indicated above, the magic elimination number is different for each of the teams.] [Note: The simplest way to calculate the magic number in relation to each team is to add the current number of Os wins and rivals losses and subtract that number from 163 (the total number of regular season games plus one).]
