Orphan Elephant Rescue On 2nd November our Voi Elephant Keepers - TopicsExpress

Orphan Elephant Rescue On 2nd November our Voi Elephant Keepers and Nick Trent, DSWT Chief Pilot, were alerted to the plight of an orphan elephant, approximately 2 ½ years old, within the Teita Estate, part of a vast area adjacent to Tsavo National Park. Sadly on this occasion we were unable to locate her as she disappeared into dense bush and despite searching for hours by plane, no luck. Reports came in about a lactating elephant that died from poisoned arrow wounds on Teita Estate boundary on Mugeno Ranch and it was assumed this was the calf’s mother. At the time there were approximately 400 elephants on the sanctuary so everyone hoped she would be absorbed into a herd. Four weeks later, on 3rd December, a lone calf was again reported within the Estate boundary. DSWT’s Voi Team once again, this time together with the Teita Estate Scouts, mounted a search and they rescued the little calf just after nightfall. It was clear that this was in fact the same calf, first sighted a whole month earlier. She had obviously not been accepted by any of the herds, and with the onset of the rains, was left behind as they moved away; she was in poor condition with sunken cheeks. She was transported that evening to our Voi Stockades where she will be raised. We have called her Ndoria after the dam where she was found and she has already been very much absorbed into the Voi orphan group. All of them are paying her great attention and her stockade neighbour, Bada, is particularly interested in her. Ndoria is doing well, taking milk and taming down fast.
