Orville Redenbacher was 62 years old when he began selling his famous fluffy popcorn. Colonel Sanders was 67 when he began selling his 11-herb finger-lickin’-good chicken. John Glenn was 77 years old when he orbited the earth—his second time. Roger Allsopp was 70 when he swam 23 miles across the English Channel. And Moses was eighty years old when God decided he was at last ready to lead two million Israelites across the Red Sea and into the Promised Land! In this skewed culture where one’s “prime” appears to complete itself before age 30, let’s take a lesson from history and discover that through the ages people have defied the odds of age to accomplish their most remarkable feats well into their “golden years.” One common thread I have found these people possessing is the refusal to allow their mere age to define their goals or restrict their activities. My 92 year old grandma reminds me well of this truth—she still hand-picks buckets of strawberries each spring and insists on baking over a dozen pies each year for Thanksgiving. I also remember well the 90 year old man I sold a vacuum cleaner to (yes, I was a vacuum cleaner salesman for awhile). What finally made the sale was his excitement that this machine would last him for 30 years! Never allow age to limit your goals or define God’s will for your life! Stop looking back at your past as the “good old days” and strain ahead toward your tomorrows as the unknown adventure God has yet to reveal. The Ageless One is not nearly as cautious about aging as you or I am; He’s got great months, years, and decades planned for you, waiting anxiously to unfold. So begin weaving your thoughts about the future with His plans for your future, and discover both a new vigor in living out Today, as well as a genuine excitement about the best years that remain for your life! “For I know the plans I have for you…plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
