Oscars & Critics are Sent Unmistakable Message About What Nation Thinks About ‘American Sniper’ BY CHARLES SAMUEL (4 HOURS AGO) YouTube Americans love Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper and we’re not just saying that. There are now numbers to prove it. In a Forbes piece documenting the most successful winter season film openings of all-time, American Sniper not only made the cut — It ruled atop the rankings. .... On top of the revenue records, the people involved in the film are being recognized for major industry awards. Among the possible accolades are six Oscar nominations—including a best actor nomination for the film’s star, Bradley Cooper. This film isn’t just a good pick-me-up on a Friday night, it’s quickly becoming iconic. Oscar execs and industry big shots aren’t the only ones that are showering the film with praise. Americans have spoken and if they had a collective vote in the Oscars, the film would sweep. According to the annual Reuters/Ipsos Oscars poll: If ordinary Americans voted for the Academy Awards, “American Sniper,” Clint Eastwood’s portrait of a sharpshooter in the Iraq war, would be the best picture winner… The film… was cited by 22 percent of respondents as the movie that should win the top Oscar among the eight nominees, according to an online survey of Americans conducted Jan. 16-23. To keep things in perspective, the film in second place on that poll is Selma—at 8%. The funny thing about the groundswell of support for the film is how polarizing the opinions have largely been. While industry stars Michael Moore and Seth Rogan have grabbed headlines for dressing up their criticisms as political attacks, major media outlets have come out to distance themselves from the film. Rolling Stone‘s Matt Taibbi has his own scathing review entitled “American Sniper is Almost Too Dumb to Criticize”: Sometimes a story is meaningless or worse without real context, and this is one of them. But, when you stop to consider the recent trouble his publication has had in sticking to facts, it’s easy to see how public opinion largely counters his own. Meanwhile, American Sniper continues to break records and defy projections.
