Osprey Bertha Honore Palmer (Potter Palmer) 1849-1918 was a celebrated Chicago Socialite, business woman, philanthropist and substantial contributor to womens, children and cultural initiatives. She came here in 1910 as a window with her two young boys because she heard stories of the beautiful untouched land a long the Little Sarasota Bay. She loved it and bought almost 100,000 acres of land. We now know the area asSpanish Point and Osprey. She bought cattle and had a ranch than called Meadow Sweet Pasture (PalmerRanch). She bought a house which was on the land by the water, added on to the house, added gardens etc. She used it fir her winter home. She loved to entertain and her rich friends would come there as a retreat. She named it The Oaks. Now it is a country club. After death her sons donated 30 acres ofland to the state for Myakka State park in her memory. Land that was once part of her cattle ranch was given to Oscar Scherer State Park to protest the Scrub Jays.
