Oss, Last night I went along to Ellerslie Karate Kumite night. The students range from white belts to Yondan. I as a spectator notice a young man of great boxing skills was training on Kumite night. So when young Adam (Shodan) was sparring with him. The boxer was using his foot work, upper cuts e.t.c As from time to time I will advise. I stood on the side and was advising young Adam to use his foot work and use his keri waza(Kicking). The boxer was scoring with upper cuts(Lesson Learnt).Even the most traditional Karateka has to adjust the traditional knowledge to cope with the different environment of fighting. There is a block in traditional Karate for it. However it has to be used in an extremely advance form. The name of the block has left my memory bank for now. It will come to me later.Lyota Machida a Sandan in JKA Karate, who is involved in MMA had to adjust his traditional Karate for the full contact environment realizing there is no wazari or ippon.Only knock outs if possible. Emily (2nd Dan) also was sparring with the boxer. She is extremely fit and a great Kumite women. I noticed a couple times he got her with the Upper Cut. In the boxing world that can be a knock out if it was connected in the correct spot.I am for 100 percent for traditional Karate with the Necessary adjustment and utilizing other techniques(every single martial art technique available) to get the job done.
