Other than a few finishing touches in the morning, the 20 houses are done. Also, we held Bible School again today for the kids, and had another large turnout. Because of the houses, the relationships built, and the message of Jesus proclaimed, a community has been impacted. Only time will tell how far our ripples will go from the pebble of faith we threw into the pond of Chimaltenango, Guatemala. Our crew down here, in general, has been all about not giving a hand-out. Each of our build teams has worked right along with the home owners. We didnt do it for them. They did it for themselves - we just filled in the few places they needed a little something - either a tool they needed or a technique or two they didnt know. But we only filled in the gap temporarily, because as soon as we showed them a new technique for doing something, they had it down. In all honesty, I believe that if we hadnt packed up the tools each night, we would have shown up in the morning to find a house or two built. It is a very rewarding thing for a soul to enable someone to do something for themself. Tomorrow, we do a few final things on two of the houses, have a dedication ceremony at each house, and then distribute a lot of food in the community weve been working in. To be sure, there will be very meaningful moments tomorrow. However, Im pretty sure the best moment of the trip for me happened today. You see, I got to be a part of building 6 of the homes. And on each of those homes, one man in particular (whose name I had a hard time catching) helped to build each of those homes. He was a big help & had a great attitude. At the end of the day today, I was sent to put the front sheets on the next-to-last house. As I got there, he showed up, and with a big smile & a puffed-out chest, he pointed to the house and said, Es mi casa. I gladly handed him the DeWalt screw gun and watched joyfully as he put the finishing touches on his own home. Hell be sleeping in it tonight.
