Other than young wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero, heres another great choice for everyday food wine - Rosso di Montalcino. Similar to his big brother Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino is made of 100% Sangiovese grapes. The major difference lies in the ageing requirement. BdM is sold five years after harvest with minimum of two years of oak ageing whereas Rosso can be sold one year after harvest. Grapes of Rosso can be the ones declassified from those for making Brunello. In some lesser vintage, it is possible for a producer to not release any Brunello but use all those grapes to make Rosso only. With less oak influence and considerably less ageing, one can expect Rosso to be a simpler, more fruity, less tannic wine. Price of a good bottle ranges from near $200 to around $300.
