Neves is an old-school centrist politician who openly favours fiscal responsibility and is generally very business-centric, whereas Marina had just about enough clout from her environmental work and humble origins to unite the right and the ultra-left around her. The danger now is that Marina strongly endorses Neves and encourages her 20% share of the votes to go in his direction (because, yknow, change). However, I suspect Dilma will win out regardless. Living standards for the poor have risen at an impressive rate since the PT came to power, and Brazil has been able to weather the global crisis without having to resort to IMF-prescribed austerity - unemployment is still very low, and the social wage is still high. Meanwhile, the rise of China means that the US cant just buy election results as easily as it used to (China has been Brazils biggest trading partner since 2009); and of course the regional context is a positive one for progressive governments.
