Our 100 year flood is all over the national news. Great visual. Great visual irony. Great source of chuckles for the rest of the country, especially for those more regularly affected by flooding. The real tragedy, however, lies not in the flooding itself, but in the aftereffects. Because Arizona was originally covered by water countless millennia ago, we still have an extraordinary number of prehistoric creatures who rest in stasis in the soil, cocooned and imperceptible yet eminently, ferociously viable. These predators, who sleep in a prolonged and desiccated state, wait patiently in a dark, dreamless sleep that transcends simple hibernation. They wait for those rare moments of abundant saturation when Nature grants them parole, for however brief a period. They are as monsters on a day pass. You wont read about them. There will be no photos or videos. There will be nothing but cars mysteriously abandoned in flash flooded roads and savage attacks in mid-Haboob attributed to flying debris. The carnage these avariciously hungry beasts leave in their wake will be conveniently swept under the rug of We dont have that sort of problem here. At least not more than once every hundred years or so.
