Our 12 hour shift began with the prospect of washed out roads and vehicle owners frantic to find their lost cars they abandoned in flood waters. 6 hours later three of our officers nearly lost their lives when an explosion occurred at the jail. One of them ran back inside to pull trapped prisoners from the collapsing debris. The other two began leading dazed and injured inmates to a safer location as they began to filter out of the damaged building. Even though the jail is not inside our jurisdiction our entire shift, including our supervisors, responded to assist. On top of that, all the officers working extra jobs came and many stayed hours after their shift had ended. Our crime scene officer was right in the middle of the crisis, helping. I have ran the gamut of emotions being stuck at a desk during the crisis. As I drive home 12 hours after I arrived, I feel an overwhelming sense of pride. Im also deeply saddened to know there is a correction officer fighting for his life. I know there were loss of lives, but they havent identified the poor souls yet. A horrible day I never thought Id witness in Pensacola.
