Our Ancient Symbol: The Tulip / Ősi jelképeink: A TULIPÁN (English - Hungarian) In our rich history of folk art, the living (and beyond living) Universe’s structure’s visual information displays in the front and inside of us: Among other things, the true representation of the tulip as a pattern. The earliest known depiction of the tulip goes all the way back to the 7th Century B.C. from a South Caucasian Scythian finding in Ziwiye, which is an ancient city in today’s Iran. The tulip is an ancient Hungarian folk symbol. It is a link to our Scythian origin. According to Gabor Luko ethnographer and others (such as the grapho-historian Geza Varga), the tulip is the earliest ancient Hungarian floral motif. Geza Varga, the above mentioned grapho-historian states that in the ancient religion, the tulip symbolizes the sky-high tree,which isn’t a life-like, but rather a symbolical representation. It’s actually targets God’s symbolic representation using the sky-high tree (in other words, the Milky Way). Similar to the representations of the sky-high tree, we can find certain symbols (word marks ) in the tulip imageries which can be identified with the Sekler runic scripts. With the help of these, some tulip representations can be read. For example, the middle petals of the tulip often the same as the Sekler written signus (os) signal. This mark depicts of the Milky Way’s fissure, in which at Christmas time the sun rises. (Note tha this signal is only used as an alternative of the female genital’s representation. It originally marked the matriarch’s vulva; but for the ancient religious period, it was not the vulva which was important, instead, the inside- born sun god.) Knowing these facts, it is quite understandable that from the beginning of the Hungarian folk songs and the material folk art, the representations of the tulips are very common. Its transformed form as a sign can be found on gate-posts, headstones, stove tiles, embroideries, hope chests, through the gifts of love, even on tools used specifically by women, ( for instance, carved distaff, paddle, mangle, etc.),and of course, also on the dishes. Így - többek között - a tulipán ábrázolás, motívum is. A legkorábbi ismert tulipán-ábrázolás a Kr. előtti VII. századból való, egy dél-kaukázusi szkíta leletből Ziwiyeből. A tulipán ősi magyar népművészeti jelkép, összekötő kapocs szkíta eredetünket illetően. Lükő Gábor etnográfus és mások (például Varga Géza írástörténész) szerint is a legősibb magyar virágmotívum. Varga Géza írástörténész szerint a tulipán az ősvallás égigérőfa-jelképe; amely nem élethű, hanem jelszerű ábrázolás, mely tulajdonképpen az égigérő fával (Tejúttal) azonos Isten jelképes ábrázolását célozták. Az égigérőfa-ábrázolásokhoz hasonlóan, a tulipánábrázolásokon is találunk olyan jelképeket (szójeleket), amelyek a székely rovásírás jeleivel azonosíthatók. Ezek segítségével egyes tulipánábrázolások elolvashatók. A tulipán középső sziromlevele például gyakran azonos a székely írás us (ős) jelével. Ez a jel a Tejút hasadékát ábrázolja, amelyben karácsonykor a Nap kél (a jelet csak másodlagosan használják a női nemiszerv ábrázolására; eredetileg az ősanya vulváját jelölte; de az ősvallás időszakában nem a vulva, hanem a benne születő napisten volt a fontos). Ezen tények ismeretében érthető, hogy a magyar népdaloktól kezdve a tárgyi népművészetben igen gyakori a tulipánábrázolás. Jellé alakult formája megtalálható kapufélfákon, fejfákon, kályhacsempén, szűrhímzéseken, kelengyeládákon, szerelmi ajándékokon, a női munkaeszközökön (pl.: faragott guzsalytalp, sulykoló, mángorló, stb). és természetesen az edényeken is.
