Our Auschwitz 70 tour has arrived in Krakow, but not before some interesting encounters on the way. In Munich, we met Simcha Horowitz, an 88-year-old survivor of Auschwitz. Eva wanted to compare tattoos with him, but one problem: He removed his after liberation. Not with plastic surgery - he simply cut it off. Eva replied, I paid for this tattoo with my life - Im keeping it! Both fascinating and valid reactions from two different survivors. When we landed at the Krakow airport, we ran into Dario Gabbai. Mr. Gabbai may be the last surviving member of the sonderkommando. The sonderkommando prisoners were forced to operate the gas chambers and crematoria at Auschwitz-Birkenau for six-month shifts, after which they were sent through the gas chambers themselves. You can read about Mr. Gabbais harrowing and brutal experience in this 1999 LA times article. (His two cousins passed away in 2014.) articles.latimes/1999/oct/20/news/cl-24100 For anyone to survive such an experience is simply amazing. All respect and honor to the survivors, and may the memory of the victims be for a blessing.
