Our Bootheel communities need your help. Please send an email to the Public Service Commission (PSC), [email protected], to help save 900 family supporting jobs in Southeast Missouri. The PSC will soon decide whether to grant an affordable electric rate needed to preserve jobs at Noranda. As you know, the loss of these jobs at Noranda would have a devastating impact on our entire region’s economy. Noranda annually contributes $300 million in economic impact to our region. The PSC has the opportunity to not only save these jobs, but to keep rates lower for all Ameren customers. Rates will go up higher if Noranda is no longer on Ameren’s system. Below is an example of the type of message that would help persuade the PSC to support Noranda. Dear Missouri Public Service Commission: I live in Southeast Missouri and support the rate relief being sought by Noranda at the Public Service Commission. Real jobs are now being lost in the Bootheel because Noranda is not able to secure an affordable electric rate. The PSC has the ability to help us by stopping the job losses immediately and prevent future layoffs, or even worse, closure of the plant. The reality and threat of these job losses is extremely important to me because so many in Southeast Missouri relies on the New Madrid smelter for its livelihood. The smelter is a huge economic engine for us. Without the smelter, families, banks and businesses in the region will suffer greatly. I support the rehearing and stipulation filed by the Office of Public Counsel (OPC) in this case. The stipulation has strong support from consumer groups and other ratepayers, because they know rates will be lower with Noranda on the system. Right now, the Commission has an opportunity to approve a compromise solution that is supported by all affected parties and the power to save 900 jobs in a region that already rates the highest in the state in unemployment, literacy and poverty. Please approve the OPC’s compromise stipulation that provides a job to 900 hard-working employees and ensures critical economic support for businesses and families in Southeast Missouri. This is a consumer friendly approach that keeps rates low for everyone. Sincerely, (Your Name)
