Our Charter of Demands Medicos Legal Action Group has issued a list of demands from various political parties to be included in their agenda as part of their manifesto. Dr Neeraj Nagpal Convenor MLAG said that India has one of the lowest budgeted expenditure on health when compared with other countries which is the reason it ranks poorly on various UN indices of healthcare. He said that we want all political parties to consider the following demands; 1) Increase posts for MBBS doctors in civil medical services all over the country by 30000 fresh recruitments. These posts should be filled by walk in interviews and should not be reserved for anyone. These doctors could be appointed with precondition to serve for 3-5 years in area of need. 2) Make violence against doctors and medicare workers and institutions a cognizable offense uniformly across the country by making required amendments in Indian Penal Code (IPC) with stringent punishment 3) Amend Consumer Protection Act to include a Cap on compensation which can be claimed for medical negligence as well as increase in penalty for frivolous complaints. 4) Annul Clinical Establishment Act in its current Form. An amended Act with inputs from professional stakeholders may be introduced after proper consultations. 5) Free MCI of Government Control and correct lopsided representations of private medical colleges and universities in MCI. Representatives of General Practitioners who are governed by MCI should have appropriate representation in accordance with thier numbers. Dr Sandeep Dhavan founder trustee of the group said that MLAG has already given its list of demands to various political parties and will very carefully see whether these are incorporated into their manifesto. Dr Anil Kumar Secretary MLAG said that doctors should vote enbloc for the party which will take up our agenda.
