*** Our City Services AT RISK City of Kent *** * Consequences of a Pass/Fail Earned Income Tax * If It Fails: The City will have to shift $1.2 million in annual funding from the existing City services budget to finance the needed police facility. Kent Police may not be able to respond to 911 calls because of prisoner transport duties. We will be over-reliant on other communities to keep us safe. Response times will get worse. If It Fails: The deteriorating and obsolete facility and equipment may necessitate closing the jail (per written warning from the state of Ohio). Consequences of a closed jail include: 1/3 fewer police patrolling neighborhoods because of prisoner transport duties. More criminal offenders will be released early. Significant tax dollars will be spent trying to hold the 1924 Police facility together for another year or two. If It Fails: The following is a sample of the City services that would be considered for reduction or elimination: * Additional cuts to personnel. One out of eight City positions would be eliminated, including police and fire. * Police K-9, drug task force position cuts * Elimination of weekend calls for the service department * Street lighting turned off * Leaf pickup * Brush collection/mulching program * Vehicle replacement delayed * Street sweeping * Mowing and snow plowing If It Passes: The City will not have to shift $1.2 million in annual funding from the existing City services budget to finance the needed police facility. City services will remain the same. Response times up to 25% faster. Every second counts. The jail will remain open. Offenders will remain detained as we will have adequate jail space. Officers will remain on safety patrols instead of wasteful prisoner transport duties. The proposed building will allow for a modern and professional police force while meeting all compliance regulations.
