Our Facebook feature post is from St Nicholas Netball Club, who like all our Clubs, has put a considerable amount of time in putting this together! Many thanks to Vanessa Forrester, St Nicholas Netball Club Vice President, (and others) for providing the following: When did the St Nicholas Netball club form? 1950 What is the background to your club/name? The St Nicholas Netball Club was formed by 3 Senior Girl Guides from the St Nicholas church in Barrington Street who decided to enter a basketball team in the Saturday competition. The team was made up of girls from the Guides who were interested in making up a team. Mr Cox, of Wychbury Street, donated the first basketball and the girls outfitted themselves with a uniform of shirt-waisted fawn linen frocks complete with red belt, collar, pocket and cuffs. How many teams did you start with? 1 How many teams do you have now? 21 (Highest number of teams the club has had at any time was approx. 33) What has been your most successful year? We have had a few years that are highlights: 1957 Senior Reserve - St Nicholas A 1st Second Grade - 1st Fourth Grade - 1st Sixth Grade - 1st 3 Senior Reserve rep players and 2 4th Grade rep players 1990 Trustbank Trophy - St Nicholas A Runner up Senior Grade – Sue Morton Trophy St Nicholas B 1st Senior Reserve – St Nicholas C Runner up Second Grade A – St Nicholas G CBA Cup Third Grade B – St Nicholas T Runner up Sixth Grade B – St Nicholas ZB Edna Yates Rosebowl 5 Canterbury Senior Rep players 1999 Premier - St Nicholas A 1st St Nicholas B 2nd Senior Reserve – St Nicholas D Joint Winners Men’s A Grade – St Nicholas MA Runner up Men’s B Grade – St Nicholas MB 1st Rep players - 1 Silver Fern, 3 NZ Men’s, 2 Canterbury, 2 Canterbury Country, 3 Under 21, 2 Under 19, 2 Under 15, 5 Canterbury Men’s a, 4 Canterbury Men’s B, 1 Men’s Under 23 Who is your longest serving player(s)? Janine Romano (current long serving player) Do your members have any involvement with other aspects of netball (bench officials, umpires, volunteers)? Current Joyce Walsh Anne Marie Wilson Past officials Rhonda Moffitt - Life member Canterbury Netball Umpires Association. A number of roles within Canterbury Netball Association including Executive member and Vice President. A member of the NZ Umpire sponsorship panels and NZ Provincial Umpires Council Delegate. Sue Morton and Noeline Ward were Presidents of CNC Lynne McLennan was Player Liaison Rep Joyce Walsh – Umpire’s Liaison Delegate and other umpire roles Ethna Rouse – Life member umpires Greta Johns, Margaret Rogers, Rhondda Moffitt, Judi Pani, Barbara Kreft, Noeline Ward, Pat Carrick, Roger Croft Alison Elder and Lesley Dick – Executive members.
