Our Intentional God (05/10/14) Psalm 52:1-5 BUT GOD…Who Do You Love? :Why do you boast in evil, O mighty man? The lovingkindness of God endures all day long. Your tongue devises destruction, like a sharp razor, O worker of deceit. You love evil more than good, falsehood more than speaking what is right. Selah. You love all words that devour, O deceitful tongue. BUT GOD will break you down forever; He will snatch you up and tear you away from your tent, and uproot you from the land of the living. Selah. (Psalm 52:1-5) Despite God’s love, and regardless of one’s inflated sense of self-worth, or one’s corrupt worldview, those who choose to exalt self and ignore God, do so at their own peril and are powerless to change the consequences unless they truly repent, which apparently was not the case in this passage. APP: Ever since we were little, we’ve been told that “God is love”. And it’s true. You find that exact phrase in John’s first letter: “We’ve come to know and believe the love which God has for us. God is love, and one who abides in love abides in God and God abides in him.” But that’s not all that God is. Here are a few other verses: For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. Deuteronomy 4:24 God is a righteous judge, and a God who has indignation every day. Psalm 7:11 For the Lord Most High is to be feared, a great King over all the earth. Psalm 47:7 A jealous and avenging God is the LORD; the LORD is avenging and wrathful. Nahum 1:2 David tells us in Psalm 11: “The LORD tests the righteous and the wicked, and the one who loves violence His soul hates. Upon the wicked He will rain snares; fire and brimstone and burning winds will be the portion of their cup.” I cannot tell you who the wicked are, but then I don’t need to know. I’m told to love my enemies. I’m told to pray for those who persecute me. But if you love destruction, evil or falsehood; if you have a deceitful tongue, like the individual described in Psalm 52, may you find mercy and grace and repentance before God breaks you down forever.
