Our Journey to Singing Rock in the Arroyo del Tajo. Be sure to come back to this thread to see newly added comments. From San Antonio, NM we drove east on Highway 380 and crossed the Rio Grande. Just under a mile further east is a road called Bosquecito. It is marked with a big green sign and a cattle guard. We drove on this for about 8 miles and turned up an arroyo. I will give gps coordinates in just a bit. We drove up the arroyo in 10 inch deep sand and pebbles (really scary) for a couple of miles. When you start up this arroyo, do not stop, keep moving no matter what, if you have to stop, find a place of the sand or gravel or I fear you will be there forever. Then there was a road that took us the rest of the way (I will give GPS coordinates for the start of the road also). There is a very steep spot for a couple of hundred feet starting at a gate. You really have to have a really good 4 wheel drive vehicle for this or dont go... If you get stuck there, nobody will be around to help you. Park at a wind mill. This spot of land is owned by the School of mines. Get out and look at a fabulous canyon. The walk is .47 miles (half a mile). A sort of trail takes you into the canyon. If you do it right, it takes you to a sign out in nowhere (see picture) You have just gotten to the Arroyo del Tajo Pictograph site with really interesting but weathered pictographs on a cliff wall shared with mud daubers and swallows. From there you walk up a very uneven arroyo to where a slot canyon begins. YOU ARE THERE... BUT and there are always buts ... you have to climb an 8 foot tall barrier, smooth rock surfaces but with foot holds in awkwark spots. It is as if the canyon is saying; you may not pass... Once you get passed that spot it is smooth sailing through this gorgeous slot canyon. Be quiet, the birds will talk to you. Walk a couple of hundred feet to singing rock, stand in a key spot and sing, start with a low E flat to get the rock to resonate... spend the rest of your time there in awe. The canyon walls have to be 200 feet in places. We were sore the next day.
