Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School named Grand Champion in the Memphis in May International Festival By: Harrison Kelly, Jennifer Parker, Connor Hood (OLPH middle school student reporters) Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School in Germantown annually hosts a major celebration to coincide with the Memphis in May International Festival. Around the city, Memphis in May events include the barbecue festival, music fest, athletic events, the Sunset Symphony, and the International Festival. This year, the Memphis in May International Festival honored the country of Panama, a country in Central America. Our Lady of Perpetual Help School’s Panama installation was a school-wide event and was named Grand Champion of the educational competition of the International Festival. OLPH fourth grade teacher Mrs. DeGloma has been honored for the last five times for the amazing country salute created at OLPH. Mrs. DeGloma and her fourth graders worked very hard to host whole school celebrations for Panama. She began efforts in the fall, brainstorming with her students and other teachers about ways to bring Panama into the heart of Germantown. Mrs. DeGloma said, “I definitely want to go to Panama after studying the country. This Memphis in May was the most enjoyable one that OLPH has done because every child participated. It is also keeping OLPH as a green school to learn about biodiversity and endangered species in Panama.” Students in every class, from preschool through eighth grade, contributed their time and talents to the Panama installation. The school hallways and classrooms were transformed with murals, decorations, music, and food to honor Panama. Some of the activities that hosted by OLPH students during the day were playing soccer, tasting Panamanian food like Tres Leche Cake, and Salsa Dancing. Sixth grader, Alan Black, who participated in Memphis in May said, “I thought that it was very fun and interesting to learn about Panamanian culture.” The middle school students created a Panamanian history museum, a puppet show, and a Panama Canal Zone. The working canal locks were created completely by students. They used a variety of materials including custom pieces printed on the schools 3D printer. Experiencing Panama during Memphis in May was a wonderful adventure for all the students, and families at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School!
