♤ Our Living Heritage Trees ♤ Native to India, the Bodhi tree (Ficus religiosa) is deemed sacred by followers of Hinduism and Buddhism. Legend has it that Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment while meditating underneath a Bodhi tree. Today, its leaves are used in traditional medicine and sometimes made into bookmarks. Be awed by this majestic Bodhi Tree in front of Bendeemer Secondary School. With a girth of 7.5m, this large ornamental tree was recently endorsed as a Heritage Tree. Its fruit are small green figs which turn purple when ripened.
