Our MOJO… I haven’t posted anything about our baby Mojo for a while now. Mainly because I couldn’t bring myself to put in words the anguish and concern we were feeling. Now though, because he seems to be on his way to recovery, I can talk about it without going into tears and feeling frustrated because we couldn’t do anything for him. Mojo started acting different just about the time we got here to Tempe. Subtle changes at first, like he was really tired or depressed. Then it progressed to not wanting to eat nor drink and going into hiding places whenever possible. He became so lethargic we thought he was dying. We took him to emergency and they couldn’t find anything. They took blood tests and they all came back negative! Nothing!!! Then we took him to the vet next door and again after a full exam they could find nothing. They took x-rays, again found nothing. Then Mojo had a few good days and we thought maybe he just had a flu bug and was on his way back to us!!! Liam took him to the park to play ball and found out he couldn’t pick up his most favorite toy…His hand ball, a ball that is soft and just right for his little mouth to pick up. Tried several times but Mojo just couldn’t open his mouth to grab it. Got in the next day to the vet and after telling them this, they sedated him to fully examine his mouth. The diagnosis is Masticatory Myositis, an inflammation of the jaw muscle. If left untreated will lead to death because eventually the mouth cannot open to take in food or water. There is no cure but if caught early can be treated to allow for a long and pain free life. That’s where we are now. He was given a high dosage shot of steroids and we continue with pills here at home along with pain pills. The last couple of days we have noticed a huge improvement in his personality!! No longer in hiding and he even jumped up on our bed this morning to say “Hey time to get up”! BIG STEP!!! We finally have hope that he will recover totally with continued steroids…Milder dosages as time goes by. He still has only about a third of his usually high energy but hoping in time he will regain it. Mojo isn’t just a dog! He is our baby with a personality that has brought many a smile as he goes from person to person to greet them and make them feel loved. He is a dog that has given of himself and his unconditional love to everyone he meets. God willing he will continue to do just that for many years to come!!!
