Our Next Reel Review! Brought to you by Hannah Strong - FX reel - critiqued by one of our senior FX artists! This reel clearly shows that Hannah has an aptitutde for this work. If she were a student, I would encourage her to continue along this path. If the purpose of the reel is to show technical mastery, it succeeds at a modest level. The tasks are not that challenging, but solid enough for what they are. Much more effort needs to be put into the artistic dimension, though. - Both fire effects need to be more interesting. Observe real fire, and notice the distribution of color and intensity, and in particular, notice the rapid change of shapes, and the details of those shapes. Also, put them into the scene by having them react to a breeze, or a puff of wind, for instance. Smoke would be a nice addition. The sconces in the hallway are very flat and uninteresting. They are all the same, and all the same constant orange color. A little texture on the walls would help. They should be rigged to act as real lights would. Houdini can do this very well. - The basket is nice. Again, a little texture demonstrates love of the image, which is important. Try using one in a RBD sim. - The fireflies need more observation. They turn on and off more quickly. It would be very good to help guide the eye with one or two hero flies, perhaps moving from the foreground much closer to the camera into the background. They are a good opportunity to feel the depth of the space - use them! - The fluid needs a much higher resolution to be interesting. This feels like an assignment done in a hurry. It would also help to have a more interesting surface to splash against. Give it a plus wherever you can - for instance, add a wet map. - The tree is okay, but it is not lit to see the vine very well. A little motion in the scene would help a lot. vimeo/52054264
