Our Reforms Labelled a Model July 11, 2014 | Filed under: Fiji News | Posted by: newsroom The advancement of the Information Communication Technology sector by the Bainimarama Government over the last few years has not gone unnoticed and has been labelled by an expert as a ‘model’ for the region. Secretary-general of the Asia Pacific Telecommunications, Toshiyuki Yamada said the new initiatives such as the establishment of telecentres in rural area, the liberalising of the communication sector and the introduction of a national broadband policy among others is certainly worth praise. “Fiji has been doing quite well with all those new initiatives and programmes which will benefit Fijians and has elevated Fiji to a model status for the region,” he said. “It is quite difficult to sit back and not say anything because the telecentres alone will greatly assist and benefit the Fijian populations and the Fijian Government must be praised for its efforts in enhancing the telecommunication sector.” Mr Yamada is in the country attending the 7th APT Policy and Regulation Forum for Pacific in Nadi and highlighted that other Pacific nations needed to learn from Fiji’s experience. “The structure in Fiji is as such that there is quite a lot of advancements in the growing sector and other nations in the region need to take a leaf or two out of the Fijian Government’s policies and programmes,” Mr Yamada said. Japanese representative Masanori Kondo shared similar sentiments. “I think Fiji has done wonderfully over the last four or five years in ensuring that their telecommunication sector grows and it is showing in the economy of the nation,” Mr Kondo said. “I would like to congratulate the Fijian Government and stakeholders in ensuring that this sector continues to advance so the effect can be felt on other similar or smaller economies in the region.”
