Our Science and Operations Officer posted this to his personal page Tuesday night. If you recall, we were forecasting severe weather, possibly significant, for Tuesday afternoon/evening and it turns out that very little happened. (Not to diminish the effects of the two tornadoes we had Monday evening/night.) If you look at the comments, youll notice a reference to a scientific study about this phenomenon, specifically that upstream convection can reduce downstream precipitation. This occurs often across the Southeast, where convection lines up along the Gulf Coast and essentially robs areas inland of the moisture needed for significant weather. This is exactly what happened Tuesday night, and unfortunately most of our computer models DO NOT handle this very well. Research continues and hopefully well get this figured out!
