Our Sense of Smell--and Why essential Oils Work: Pungent, stinky, sweet or just plain delicious.. our sense of smell cues us in to the world around us in a profound way. Last week I shared with you a lot of information about how our nose affects who we are and how we meander through the world. After doing quite a bit of research, from reading, taking classes and experiencing just what smelling something good or not so good can do to my mood, I understand that this sense can affect us on many levels and that is why I find it so important to diffuse essential oils on a regular basis. I use them often by rubbing my palms together and taking a deep inhale, as well. These are some of the easiest ways to use them and can be most beneficial for emotional health. Here are some a few more tidbits about scent sense to get your nose wrapped around how incredible this sense is to us! You can smell things more clearly when there is additional moisture in the air, usually spring and fall. For the same reason, it is stronger after exercise, which also increases the moisture in the nasal passage. It also helps that the diffuser pumps water particles into your air as well. It can be a catalyst to a keen sense of smell. The human brain can process roughly 10,000 smells in an area the size of a postage stamp, each triggering a neural response. Humans have 5 to 6 million odor detecting cells but compared to the animal kingdom, that isn’t much. A dog has 220 million, rabbits have about 100 million. The smell of a new leather jacket or pair of shoes makes everyone happy. But I love my essential oils! And while not everyone can get new shoes every day, you can diffuse essential oils, they are much less expensive. My favorites at the holidays are peppermint, spruce, pine, orange, lemon, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Or any blend of the above. Airlines are doing it too. Singapore Airlines recreated a scent of the Orient for its flights. The aroma of bamboo and lotus flowers is added to hot towels for passengers. Your sense of smell shuts down as you drift off to slumber. The phrase “wake up and smell the coffee” is closer to the truth than you would imagine. The coffee will come alive and stimulate your sense of smell only after you are fully awake. Your sense of smell accounts for 75-95% of the impact any flavor has. Without being able to smell the difference between carrots and sweet potatoes, it would be more difficult to tell them apart. Sporting events can use the power of smell. During baseball’s World Series of 2009, the Tampa Bay Rays decided to replace the stale pretzels, caramel corn and beer in favour of a scent called “citrus burst” to flood the stadium. Anosmia is a condition where people cannot smell. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anosmia Many hotel chains in America have devised their own scent. Sheratons smell like fig, clove and jasmine; Westin lobbies go for white tea while the Four Points venues smell of cinnamon. In one study, a selection of women wore men’s T-shirts and were more attracted to the bodily scents of men who had a different type of gene section. Have some empathy for the poor people who suffer from cacosmia. Even something we might sense as pleasant, like orange peel or fresh cut grass is horrible because they perceive all smells as something repulsive, such as rotting food or vomit. Forget fingerprints or CCTV, perspiration could be the big thing for crime busting in the future. Dr Michael Gozin, of Tel Aviv University’s School of Chemistry, and his team are dissecting the components of human sweat as a new kind of identification, saying each person has a unique, chemical fingerprint. It is not quite enough now to go to a museum to see the past, you might have to smell it. At the Jorvik Viking Centre, a stench is pumped inside to give visitors a true simulation of what the Viking era would have smelled like.
