Our Sheltering God Ruth 1:6; 2:12 Then she arose with her daughters-in-law that she might return from the land of Moab, for she had heard in the land of Moab that the Lord had visited His people in giving them food May the Lord reward your work, and your wages be full from the Lord . . . under whose wings you have come to seek refuge. Psalm 53:2: God has looked down from heaven to see . . . if there is anyone who . . . seeks after God. Observation: Naomi and her two daughters-in-law had become widows three while living in Moab; Naomi and Ruth decided to return to Naomis home because they had heard of the good provision of the Lord there, while Orpah chose to live with her own people. Application: I love it when the Lord establishes a theme in my heart through multiple passages of Scripture in the same reading. Today, the theme is how our good God shelters His children when they pursue Him with a pure heart, a whole heart. Naomi knew of the goodness of God and heard that He was providing food for His people. She was eager to get in on what God was doing. In the next chapter the Lord Himself, through Boaz, affirmed the decision that the two women had made to seek refuge under His wings. He even said, in Ruth 2:12, that their work-their part in all this-was simply to seek refuge in Him, while His part is to do the sheltering, to provide refuge and covering for those who understand that they cannot meet their own needs in and of themselves. In Psalm 53 God said that He looks down from heaven to see if there is anyone who seeks after Him. See how He longs to meet every need? He meets the need of my heart for fellowship, and He provides all the resources I need for daily living in response to my having sought His covering. Prayer: Oh Lord, quicken my heart, my mind, my soul to You. Breathe life into all my places of deadness and fear, that I might run to You, not just to hide, not just to escape something, but to run to You with the joyful abandon of a child who knows what it is to be swept up in the arms of his daddy. You are my Abba, my Father. You, O Lord, are filled with longing to shelter me close and to meet every need I have. Thank You for Your unsurpassed love. I gladly give myself to You without reservation.
