Our State will not fund or provide facilities or computers for those who need legal assistance. Legal Aid, the federally funded program to provide attorneys for certain low income individuals, will only assist in a limited category of cases where income guidelines are met. Larger states with more resources are now operating centers staffed by attorneys and paralegals to assist with the preparation of forms and instructions for those who cannot afford to pay an attorney $200-300 dollars per hour. Some states now license paralegals and permit them to run their own private business to provide limited legal assistance without the supervision of an attorney. I believe that access to the legal system can not be reserved to those who can pay thousands of dollars for a full time lawyer. We must provide affordable, limited assistance to those who are capable and willing to represent themselves.
