Our Sweet Old Gladys is traveling tomorrow! Shes headed up to Michigan to stay with our buddies at Bark Nation where her surgical appointment awaits her. Well post lots of photos of her road trip starting bright and early! In addition to worn down & broken teeth and hair loss, Gladys has hyperplastic & inguina mammary tissue. Basically, this means that there’s out-of-control cell growth in the mammary tissue closest to her groin. This type of out of control growth (hyperplasia) is nearly always directly related to an external stimulus; in Gladys’ case, we’re guessing it’s the hormone fluxes that come from being a breeding machine for many years. It can be a precursor to malignant (cancerous) tumors (as cancer is—at its simplest definition—out of control cell growth), but is not necessarily fatal or even cancerous unless it starts invading other parts of the body (e.g., tumors that start in one area, then hitch a ride to the heart, kidneys, lungs, liver, brain via the bloodstream). This is all we know until the pathology report comes back. What we hope for in the report is words like “benign neoplasm” (non-cancerous new growth) vs. “mast cell or anything with the name “-oma” in it. Regardless of what the result is, her tumors have to be removed in order for a diagnosis, and just as importantly because they’re severely inhibiting her quality of life and mobility–and she deserves all of her freedom now. Gladys surgery is estimated at about $2,300, including her dental work and all post-op diagnostics and meds. Can you help us to get this sweet girl on the road to recovery? youcaring/queeng
