Our ambassador Allan Sparkes has been in the news overnight after heroically saving a man from being hit by a train. Incredibly, this is not the first time Allans bravery has come to the fore, he was previously awarded the Cross of Valour – Australia’s highest bravery decoration – for rescuing a child trapped in a storm water pipe. Serving for twenty years as a frontline police officer, Allan had to take time out due to the cumulative effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) coupled with chronic depression. Allan set about re-building everything that mattered to him by commencing a process of recovery, a roller coaster of successes and challenges which lasted for many years. Allans book, The Cost of Bravery, details his inspiring story of survival, recovery and adaption. Allan believes you cannot have good mental health without good physical health and vice versa. He recommends to continue to set goals for positive achievements. Helping others is a fantastic benefit.
