Our beautiful and darling Malamute Legacy is now ready for adoption! We know we are a Siberian rescue, but sometimes those shelter pictures dont really show size :) So when we went to pick up this girl from an animal control, we kind of did a double take. And Malamutes are different from Siberians to be sure, but we had committed to her so we brought her in. And boy, are we glad we did because she is truly one of the nicest dogs we have ever had in rescue. She is just darling. But Legacy came in with a very badly damaged back right leg. She could not use it and it was impeding her movement. We brought her to several vets to get our options. Ultimately, because she was not using the leg and it was limiting her motion, because the foot was dragging and causing abrasions and perhaps most importantly, because she mentally was so conscious of her limited movement that it was affecting her dog interactions and her overall demeanor, we, along with our ortho vet, made the decision that we needed to remove her leg. This was not a decision we made lightly or quickly. We spent 6 weeks trying every other option to increase her movement and keep the leg. But it became clear to her foster home, the AAHI Board and our vet resources that the leg needed to be removed to give her the best quality of life possible. And we knew we made the right choice when we picked her up after surgery and she RAN to the car! We had never seen her move that quickly or smoothly before and here she was, with a huge bandage and incision, leaping and running (and yes, we told her she needed to be quiet and calm, but did we mention she is a young spirited Malamute? :)) Legacy is all healed up and is doing phenomenally well in her foster home. She gets along great with the male and female Siberian in the house-she loves to play with them. She is crate trained and house trained and is now ready to move in to her forever home. Here is what her foster Dad has to say about Legacys: She doesnt need or want pity. She wants activity and a lifestyle that brings her movement and constant belly rubs and love. Ive always felt sorry for a three legged dog. I felt as if their life would be full of challenge and strife and things would be hard for them because they were broken. I could not have been more mistaken. They arent broken. They want a home full of toys, not sorrow. She wants a home full of love, not regret. Legacy is proud and happy and wants a home that will love her just as she is, which is pretty perfect. Are you that home? If so, apply to us at adoptahusky
