Our book will feature several thematic insets providing context to Yangon’s built environment. One of these insets will provide background to the riverfront. As the British conceived Yangon as Burma’s main trading port, much of the land beyond Strand Road was devoted to industry and port functions, limiting public access to the jetties in Botataung and Pansodan. Although Yangon’s port is currently undergoing some upgrading, most of the growth in the country’s commercial cargo will have to be handled at containerized deepwater ports, e.g. in the new special economic zones such as Thilawa. Unsurprisingly, real estate developers have set their eyes on the desirable waterfront and the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) has been evaluating redevelopment plans. It is expected that zoning restrictions will limit building heights in order to preserve views of the downtown area as well as Shwedagon Pagoda. Any updates by our readers are appreciated.
