Our buddy Tonka Little Man Peck has been afflicted with an autoimmune disease and may not have long to live. He is taking steroids to help, but so far there havent been any changes. As much as I want to crawl into bed for eternity, it helps to just be at work with my friends and have clients passive-aggressively blame me for not making coffee for them in the lounge. Sorry for not serving you free coffee; my dog is dying. You know? But it does help. It helps to remember that everyones lives go on, and we grieve and then my life continues as well, with a piece of my heart sort of trailing on the ground until it gathers enough courage to let go. My favorite memory about Tonka is one night when we were at my parents house, and he came DASHING out of my dads computer room, with my dad barreling out after him, yelling obscenities. Tonka was licking his chops; clearly something naughty had been eaten. Turns out my dad had made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, which Tonka stole and wolfed down in a single gulp. If any of us kids had done that, we would have been grounded for 93 years... but dad just pretended to be mad for about 3 minutes before laughing about the whole thing. Its amazing how a pet can soften even the crabbiest of dads. Hug your furry ones today.
