Our charity organization Hope in action received from RADIOLOGY WITHOUT BORDER an ultrasound machine Toshiba Nemio 550-SSA. Over the past 1.5 years we have been using it during charity medical outreaches into remote areas of Ukraine. As of today 876 patients were screened. Outreaches are performed twice a month on weekends by the team of volunteer physicians. The ultrasound allows us to establish a correct diagnosis for numerous breast, thyroid and joint disorders. Annually in Ukraine about 8000 thyroid surgeries are performed for nodular goiter. Only 3000 of those would be supported by the evidence. The ultrasound machine allows us to screen and select only those patients, for whom surgery is really indicated. This is a picture of a women, who underwent thyroidectomy for thyroid cysts. In a reality this condition does not require surgery but observation only. Using an ultrasound enables us to spare patients like her from unnecessary surgery and medical expenses associated with it. The later is often critically important for our low income patients. Some other patients may have a visually evident goiter but normal thyroid size, as estimated by the ultrasound.
