Our culture and languages are integral to our lives and well being - TopicsExpress

Our culture and languages are integral to our lives and well being and are integral to any advancement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. The National Cultural Policy resulted in 50% more funding for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language programs, however this is a long way from what is required to stem the loss of our languages. We need to see our languages in the school curriculum - with the appropriate agreement and involvement of the owners of that language. I have seen some wonderful examples where this has occurred - Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children learning, speaking and singing the local language. Its exciting and inspiring to hear - gives me goosebumps. In action this contributes to the identity of, and respect for Aboriginal people, and to a positive relationship between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. I will continue to promote this approach, as well as for substantial additional support for language programs in communities, so that we have the teachers, interpreters and strong languages into the future.
