FRANKFORT FIRE DEPARTMENT GEARING UP FOR BUSY 2014 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK School visits, extinguisher classes, station tours to focus on fire safety education Frankfort, Ind. – September 22, 2014 – Celebrating October 5 – 11 as 2014 Fire Prevention Week, Frankfort firefighters plan to reach approximately 3,300 students with school visits, including fire drills, fire prevention lectures, station tours and smoke trailer visits as well as extinguisher classes for Frankfort industries. In addition to school and industry visits, Fire Department team members will participate in the Boiler Harley Davidson Community Day and the Fire Department Union Local #705 Horseshoe Tournament at the Moose Lodge on Saturday, October 11. The informational and practical activities provided throughout the week are meant to provide school staff and students with valuable opportunities to practice exiting buildings in a calm, controlled manner as well as teaching industry representatives the proper use of fire extinguishers, according to Fire Chief John Kirby. “Because it’s never too early to educate our youth on smart, safe escape measures in the event of a fire, our outreach efforts range from youngsters in daycare to high school students,” Kirby said. “Youngsters are eager to learn and often are the ones who help family members create escape plans and designate pre-arranged outdoor meeting locations as part of a proactive approach to keep everyone safe. “Our team will visit every Frankfort school throughout Fire Prevention Week, along with Covenant Academy. Each of our presentations will be age-appropriate demonstrations and fire drills, so all of our youth can understand steps to take in the event of a fire and how to remain safe,” Kirby said. On Monday, October 6, firefighters will visit Blue Ridge Primary, followed by Green Meadows Elementary on Tuesday, October 7 and Suncrest Elementary on Wednesday, October 8. On Thursday, October 9, firefighters will host some of Frankfort’s youngest residents from Noah’s Ark Daycare at fire headquarters and conduct fire drills at Frankfort Middle School and Frankfort High School on Friday, October 10. Frankfort Fire Department leadership is extending the Department’s Fire Prevention Week activities into the following week to conduct a fire drill and smoke trailer demonstration at Covenant Academy on Wednesday, October 15. Offering tours of the Department’s smoke trailer, firefighters will participate in the Boiler Harley Davidson Community Day on Saturday, October 11 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at 1665 South County Road 800 West, along with firefighters and two fire trucks from Mulberry Station #11. According to Assistant Fire Chief Ed Cripe, the Local #705 Horseshoe Tournament at the Moose Lodge will include a fundraiser for the Dave Elliott and Dick Sheets Scholarship Fund at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 11. “Funds raised the names of both of these dedicated former Frankfort firefighters will to go local students interested in pursuing a public safety or medical-related career in college. We hope to raise enough funds to provide two $1,000 scholarships,” Cripe outlined. Frankfort firefighters believe children are not the only ones who should focus on fire prevention, with the Department staff encouraging all Frankfort residents to use Fire Prevention Week as an opportunity to check the batteries in smoke detectors. Frankfort Fire Inspector Jeff Wellman says, “prevention is the key word we emphasize all year, but especially with focused outreach and education during Fire Prevention Week. “This year’s theme happens to be Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month! so Fire Prevention Week is a perfect time to start practicing the simple, yet so important step of changing the batteries in household smoke detectors,” Wellman said. “That action can make all the difference in helping to alert families to smoke or fire and giving everyone time to escape safely. “Through our Safer Seniors Program we offer free fire safety inspections and smoke detector checks for Frankfort’s senior citizens and those physically challenged in our community. All anyone has to do to take advantage of the program is simply call us at 654-4329 for a free appointment. “During our fire safety inspection, we will make suggestions – where appropriate -- for any safety enhancements such as not having too many plugs in one outlet. There are never any fines issued. It’s a 30-minute, no-cost service designed to help keep our most cherished and vulnerable residents safer,” Wellman said. National Fire Prevention Week was established on the 40th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 by the International Fire Marshals Association who determined the week-long commemoration should occur annually in the week that includes October 9, the date the fire did the most damage. More than 250 people were killed with 100,000 left homeless while more than 17,400 structures were destroyed and more than 2,000 acres burned in that tragedy.
