Our education may be free but the current educational system in my view is misleading and generating putrid social problems and upsurge in CRIMES with unfit role models, fascist managements and a Judiciary mess ! I share David Orrs ideas that Education within 4 walls creates illusions rather that openness to the real world. I believe that the government should refrain from false promises to our youth and their families, and show respect to our Nation, for without them you are no one. Indicative failures (a) “projected 9-year primary schooling, a shelved Dinosaur by the same Government and without plans whatsoever” ; (b) “four important years have passed since Computers (Tablets), were promised to Form IV students. I am sure they could have done better in their Exams but Alas ! It is a shame for any Government that has succeeded in its fight & plight for Independence and Republic status, to now treat their nationals like puppets under strings, managed by state-of-the-art lies, dictatorship, and manipulation ! The students riots of 1975 in a quest for “Equality in Education accessible to all”, and its implementation by SSR, are today a slap in the face for Mauritian students. The poor are disadvantaged because of the unaffordable costs in tuition fees in contradiction to Free Education. Most educators in schools and colleges have figured out a lucrative tuition business that makes them too tired to teach in our free classrooms. Our childrens qualities of life have dwindled, as they have no time for normal growth and development. Both kids and parents are under pressure. The close knit family bonds are continuously fragmenting. This has a direct effect on the type of tomorrows society we are producing ! Dont blame the parents my learned Mr Prime Minister Sir, for you should have better managed the foundations laid down by “Mo Papa”. Frustrations with inequality in education and lack of career guided plans will only propagate social misfits, which will ultimately make a national mockery. Do students of today have the stamina, guts and determination of the 1975 rioters, to put our derailed educational system on track again ? Well, Students of today are bred as “Yes Men”, “do as you are told”, for of FEAR OF SIGNIFICANT REPRISALS AND VICTIMISATION, let alone you to think and make a critical analysis against injustice. “You can have an independent TV channel ; but without license to transmit News”. I say : “If education is the backbone of the future of Mauritius”, I equally opine that the system of Education is responsible for the rate of shameful, odious yet young criminality in this Country. It has for decades caused alienation between parents and children, causing substantial family pressure and disharmony. The constant nagging from parents and emphasis on achievements affects time for other essential development. For example, lack of physical & social activities. It still rings the bell : Prime Ministers Election statement “Nu pu change ou la vie dan 100 zour”. Disgrace is too mild a word. Dont we know it too well ; Jobs are received not through merits and qualifications, but more importantly requires :-your beauty and elegance, the number of people you can manipulate, your ability to procure the best lipstick ; or the shortest of mini skirt you can wear, number of “miles” you can run in paisa of course, plus “Ki sannla fin avoy toi isi ? Germans were identified as the best educated people on Earth, but their education did not serve as an adequate barrier to barbarity in the twentieth century. In Wiesels words : It emphasized theories instead of values, concepts rather than human beings, abstraction rather than consciousness, answers instead of questions, ideology and efficiency rather than conscience. In my analysis of the above I regret to see similarities. Our society is becoming plagued with barbarous activities. It appears that the bigger the Crime the easier it is to escape legal loopholes. No wonder criminals are posing as actors and actresses on the newspapers with great big smiles on their faces. What messages are Role models displaying to us in our 21st century Society ? E. g :-are these decision makers exempt from the rules of law ? “La Lwa a De Vites”, e. g wife battering, punitive transfers, drink driving, illegal rallies, themes such as Macaroni episode, Varma gate, Briani saga, Gooljaury Super precincts, Soornac acquisitions, storage of Biometric information on ID cards with hidden agendas, secret deals re-Jin Fei, Neo Town, Singapore/ID Cards, Mangalore are all blatant disgrace to our acumen. What do we learn from a PM who leaves his country for London for any excuse ? I wont be far wrong if I state that “He is the only PM who visits London more times than any other in the world. The benefits, education and democracy, Diegogarcians and their families enjoy, will be daft to compare with Mauritius or Diego Garcia ! Dont You think Enough is Enough Mr Egocentric Sir ? The worth of education must now be measured against the standards of decency and human rights abuse. It is not education that will save us, but education of a certain kind, mainly treating everybody with dignity regardless of their political stands. “David Ehrenfeld points out that important knowledge is being lost because of over emphasis for lucrative reasons and I am inclined to shorten it to GREED. Amongst successful people, the country desperately needs more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every shape and form. It needs people of moral courage willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane. The government use of religious platforms for political vendetta, is deplorable as it shamelessly undermines spiritual functioning as place of worships. Organisations currently sprouting like mushrooms, with leaders behaving like crabs in a bucket climbing over their friends and once out ; never look back onto those shoulders they climbed. Educational sham : Bangladeshi and Nepalese students have been ripped off and abused into Mauritius education that failed standards. Sooner they raised their concerns ; they were issued with deportation orders. We commemorate Slavery abolition but sadly conning our own asian counterparts into Modern Slavery – Foreign workers being treated like animals with peanuts payments. How far have we moved since independence ? Bouz Fix. Do an assessment for yourself. Meet 25 people and ask them if they would prefer to be back under the British Rule or this government. I quote at least 20 of them to opt for British. Dont forget your great PM may be one of them for his London obsessions. What kind of education does this Govt expects you to have ? A Government, who tells you that a microchip ID card is 100% hack proof, that he will use only 5% of which 95% will remain his secret. Fingerprints he wants on database against its constitutions and violation of Human Rights. An attitude that shuts you up ! We have built a world of sybaritic wealth for a few and Calcuttan poverty for a growing underclass. In the words of Ron Miller, editor of Holistic Review : Our culture does not nourish …., cultivate vision, imagination, or aesthetic or spiritual sensitivity, gentleness, generosity, caring, or compassion. Increasingly in the late 20th Century, the economic-technocratic-statist worldview has become a monstrous destroyer of what is loving and life-affirming in the human soul. Lack of values by law breaking role models in our educational system, will continue to fail expectations of a good and sound society. I can only sum up with a contemptuous statement we are all bright, but they you vote for will be always brighter than you, or else you are allowed to become Educated m
