Our fallen nature betrays us at times. Because of carnality, it is natural to all mankind to sin. Although many Christians have been saved by placing faith in Christ, far fewer seem to engage in actual discipleship today. This is partly due to many denominations dropping the emphasis. The popular subjects on the Christian bestseller lists today have more to do with success, money, and seeker sensitive strategies. Trying to find fresh material on discipleship is tricky. As a result, the Church is more carnal and less disciplined. People show up for sermons like, 7 ways to prosper or Smile God loves you! -- messages that are short on Bible and long on carnal appeal. Its more difficult to develop sermons that have meat. Some church organizations are doing away with bible study and Sunday school -- substituting discussion groups. All too often, without a strong moderator these discussions veer off course. If we are not teaching the bible then how can believers develop faith if it comes through the Word of God. I caution those looking for a cheap formula to make their sermons spicy and glitzy like the TV preachers messages. Yes being fresh, applicable, and relevant is very important. But if people are going to leave our churches and walk in the world every week they need more than the new Christian book store fad. They need thus says the Lord! They need the life changing principles of victory from the Word of God. And they need a church that will teach them spiritual disciplines. Ive never claimed to be a gifted preacher. But my promise to any family that joins us at Gentry First Assembly is that we are and always will be a bible centered church. Join us at GFA each Sunday @ 10:45 am until Jesus comes!
