Our family goal is to put 3 good-sized deer in the freezer every year. Before the season I gave my two youngest kids one of those a bit of ribbing pep talks that Dads sometimes give. I told them I could use some help because last year they didnt help (not that they didnt put time on stand trying) and I had to bag all 3 deer for the freezer. Well my youngest son (11) stepped right up and bagged his 1st deer, a 1.5yr old 6pt that weighed 172 lbs before field dressing and 132 lbs field dressed during his very first deer hunt of this 2013-2014 season the morning of Saturday 21 Sept 2013 during the Michigan Youth Deer Hunt (Liberty Hunt) - so he did his part and we thank God for His Providential Care. On Monday evening 28 Oct 2013 I had my 28th deer sighting while deer hunting this season - my 4th buck sighting - the first buck I had seen that was over 1.5yr old - and I did my part and bagged a likely 3.5yr old (based on jawbone) 8pt which weighed 178 lbs before field dressing and 146 lbs field dressed and again we thank God for His Providential Care. It is now my hope & prayer that my youngest daughter (nearly 16) will bag one for the freezer sometime during this next two months of deer season. Her homework schedule this year has been rough - so rough that despite wanting to hunt (she had planned to sit on the very stand I took the 8pt from that night with me on a stand 45 yards further west) she has been able to hunt only once. I am thankful that she is so very responsible and has a good grasp on priorities. I am also thankful that she mentioned to me the impression she had that I should still go hunt that spot even though she wasnt going to be able to hunt with me - because she felt strongly impressed we were going to be successful. Candidly when she bowed out due to homework I was thinking of going over to hunt another stand on the opposite side of the property which had the correct wind to hunt that day. So it would put a BIG smile on this deer hunting Dads face if all 3 of the at home deer hunters put a deer in the freezer this year - a really BIG smile. With two deer in the freezer before October expires we Praise God from whom all blessings flow!! ---- Now along with hunting close by my youngest daughter when homework allows her to hunt my hunting attention shifts to trying to bag a wild turkey for our Thanksgiving dinner - that would be a first for this deer hunter.
