Our farming family took a pretty big business step ( for us) - TopicsExpress

Our farming family took a pretty big business step ( for us) yesterday. Mike and SIL hauled in 22 bred cows for fall calving, our first cow herd since we closed out the VA farm 20 years ago. I had to leave before they got back with them, but Mike was leaning on his pickup truck in the driveway when I got home. This is his Im so exited, you have to come see this! pose, so I grabbed a tumbler of ice water and we headed back into the farm, to let me get a look. Very pretty stock. All black or black baldies, of course. Well be hoping for a healthy crop of calves, looking for a good bull, and searching out a good bit of stuff like penning and headgates. He saw what he wants at the source farm yesterday. We have feelers out with a couple more sources, and hope to buy another few head for this farm before its too late to bring them in to calve starting in September. Lots of hay to make, between now and November! After 20 years of contract pig production, this is our little stab at some return to independence. Wish we had done it sooner, especially when cows were cheaper, but it is what it is. Better late than never. Hitting the road, for fly ribs and mineral tubs today. Those of you in beef, welcome us newbies, please!
