Our featured song today at The Box is one of three versions that charted in 1957. The Rays recorded the original, written and produced by Bob Crewe & Frank Slay. Their version debuted in the charts the week October 5th, 1957, at #95. A week later, Steve Gibson & The Red Caps debuted at #97, eventually peaking at #63. The Diamonds version was debuted the week of November 2nd, 1957, at #88. The Diamonds version, did very well in radio airplay, however, sales lagged. It ended its run, peaking at #10. Hermans Hermits released their cover in 1965, reaching #5 on the Hot 100. Our rendition today, the original by The Rays, was the biggest, peaking at #3 in both the Pop & R & B charts. According to lore, Bob Crewe saw a couple embracing through a window shade, as he passed by on a train. Crewe mentioned his idea to Frank Slay, who owned a small Philadelphia record label. The two sat down and wrote, Silhouettes.
