Our final SOAP for 1 Samuel-- S:: 1 Samuel 31:1-6 1 Samuel 31 New International Version (NIV) Saul Takes His Life 31 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa. 2 The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua. 3 The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him critically. 4 Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and run me through and abuse me.” But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it. 5 When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died with him. 6 So Saul and his three sons and his armor-bearer and all his men died together that same day. O:: As the war between the Israelites and the Philistines raged on, the Israelites began to flee. The Philistines picked off Sauls sons and critically wounded him. He asked his servant to end his life, but the servant declined. Weighing his options and fearing torture, Saul fell on his own sword. A:: Saul was chosen, anointed and appointed, but he fell long before this days battle. This is a story that has been repeated throughout time. Oh, how the mighty have fallen, is a phrase (that comes from 2 Samuel, by the way) used to describe graceless acts of the once great. Its a story found often in Scripture, and sadly also in our lifetime. Will we ever learn to completely commit to God and His ways? As weve examined the life of Saul over the month of May, did you recognize yourself in any of the chapters? Did you identify with any of the people or decisions? Even if you feel theres no way out of your personal cage or that all hope is lost, God is waiting for you. Turn to Him. P:: God, how we rage and run and remember the wrong, the hurt, and the pain of our lives. It seems too hard to turn to You, even impossible. Show us that when all is lost and were surrounded by our enemies or tortured by our own hands, You are there for us. Help us list the miracles Youve already accomplished so our hope can be restored. Amen.
