Our first-ever White-fronted Goose! What a sweetheart! Thank you to Rodney D. for saving this adorable goose! She is our first ever Greater White-fronted Goose. She is a juvenile bird. Did we mention she is adorable? On presentation, she was thin, weak, in mild respiratory distress with some open-mouthed breathing and an obvious fracture to the right tibiotarsus (equivalent to the human tibia/fibula). After a very brief exam to assess her condition, she was given fluids, her injured leg was wrapped to the body and immediately placed in a hospital cage due to her respiratory distress. After an hours rest, she was breathing normally and we decided to take her in for radiographs. She did well under anesthesia and the radiographs confirmed the fractured tibiotarsus. We are happy to say this can easily be repaired with the use of external fixators (like the one we used in our current Swainsons Hawk). However, the whole body radiograph (good thing we do whole body views!) indicates that there may be damage to the right shoulder and elbow. Both joints appear to be out of position and may be dislocated. In addition to fluids, she has been treated with corticosteroids for pain and inflammation, B Vitamins and Iron for anemia, and antibiotics to prevent infection. She is now resting quietly in her hospital cage with her leg in a Robert Jones splint. She is eating and drinking on her own and is a truly delightful patient!
