Our first film from the NFR list is On the Waterfront, made 1954, inducted 1989. I have never seen the film before. It stars Marlon Brando as a former prize-fighter dealing with the corruption and greed of a dockside union boss. The story was predictable, and I think it should have ended in the opposite way as it did... it would have felt more believable and with a stronger message. Brandos acting, and that of his costars, was superb. Ive never seen any Brando films (I know, I know) and I can actually see how he revolutionized modern acting with his movements and improvs, which brought a lot of texture to his characters and the scene. Bottom line is that I did like the film, but for the first twenty minutes really thought that I wouldnt because of the slow and rather awkward start. It deserves the awards it won, however, and a place on the NFR. See it if you havent.
