Our golden retrievers periodically get hot spots. . . skin infections, which if untended can turn very ugly very fast. Up to now the best treatment Ive found is to thoroughly wash the area with hot soapy water, and then apply a Betadine (provodone/iodine) solution to it with a cotton ball a couple of times a day. This usually dries it up in about a week. The worry I have is that the other dogs. . . or the dog with the problem will try to lick the area, and I dont think that Betadine is the best thing for them to be consuming. So I keep a cone on the dog it its in an accessible place, or we keep the dog isolated from the other dogs if its not. This episode is on the dogs cheek, where she cant get to it, so we just keep her separated from the other dogs when shes being treated. . . All that being said, Ive had such good luck with the Wild oil of oregano for my foot itch, I thought about treating the dogs with it also. . . wasnt sure about how they might tolerate it, but I found the following article, that speaks of it being good for canines, so Im going to give it a try:
