Our hearts go out to the families who lost loved ones in the inferno following the tragic accident on Saturday night on the Northern By-pass in Namungoona. The sorrow and pain are deep. May God comfort you. To ask why is not only human but necessary, not so that we may cast blame on those involved many of whom are now no more, but so that we may learn from the incident and where possible avoid it being repeated. It was a road accident. The only way we avoid road accidents is to drive carefully. Let all of us who drive commit ourselves to driving carefully. Then people dashed to benefit from the accident - to scoop the petrol that was spilling over, reaping from where they had not sown. Sadly, this is not uncommon in Uganda. It is now become a culture: It there in government, in private sector, churches, etc - literally everywhere. The price is heavy. Let us all commit to end rout out this culture. The argument has been made by many: that those who dashed to make a kill from the oil spill are not your typical thieves robbing the country of its future, but rather desperate city eking a a living out of whatever they can find: the struggle to survive. The challenge of un-employment must be addressed squarely.
