Our hotel in Bhopal was very close to the factory. Driver Rameshji told us that he was a bachelor when it happened, living in a building with 16 rooms. He was woken by a horrible, severe burning sensation in his eyes, as though someone was frying huge amounts of really hot chillies. On staggering out of his room, he saw that the building was empty. Everyone had fled. One person had been left behind - the supposedly mentally disabled brother of someone. Which is kind of ironic, because that boy told Rameshji to soak a gamchha with water and wrap it around his head. They did so, and that was probably what saved their lives. (Ramesh ji continuously has paan and a beedi in his mouth now, but hes proud of the fact that he has no illnesses.
