Our interns rock: The Medill Undergraduate Student Advisory Council (MUSAC) is proud to announce the 2014 Medill Convocation student speaker: Karen Chen Karen Chen is thrilled to be graduating with a double major in Journalism and Political Science. During her four years here, she was lucky to be a part of many families within Medill. She pursued investigative public interest journalism as a proud member of Medill Watchdog, worked with a close-knit team following the story of a Nigerian refugee seeking asylum and traveled to South Africa for her journalism residency with an adventurous and spunky group of classmates. Outside of Medill, she co-organized the Northwestern University Summit on Sustainability and was a writer in the creative non-fiction sequence. She has always felt nurtured by incredible mentors who pushed open every door and inspired by fellow students who have shown her what compassion and courage look like. Growing up in Canada, Karen later moved to Beijing where she completed high school, and like many of her friends here, began her journalism career as the editor-in-chief of her high school paper. She has reported in four different countries so far: writing for The Beijinger magazine and interning as a local reporter for the Ottawa Citizen, The Star in Johannesburg and the Chicago Tribune. After graduation she will join the Washington Post as a reporting intern. Karen is humbled to have the honor of speaking at convocation this year, especially among classmates who have already done amazing work and will certainly continue to illuminate the world around them. Congratulations, Karen!
