Our land was fertile and we used to get good harvests but then the weather changed, the rain is really erratic. Those of us that do farming, work and work but get nothing back if theres no intervention from government soon. We just dream of rainfall because the weather has changed, the climate has changed. There are no signs telling us whether rains will come or not. There are so many dry spells that most poor farmers cannot even grow enough to survive for the whole year. I am personally weary of planting Maize this year because of the meager performance of last year. Our country has steadily begun to experience extreme weather outside the natural variability of our traditional climate. Remember that about two to three weeks ago, rains started with flooding in most areas and destroyed much including both property and the already drought-hit gardens. I believe that most of this derives from the impact of man-made climate change. Farmers, city dwellers, scientists and government; We all have cause to be worried! As a poor country, we are ill prepared to be able to adapt. We must admit though that, this crisis has been caused by both citizens and poor government policies as much as by weather patterns. Its hot, dusty, muddy and darker by all means. It’s still very dark at 6:30am and by 6:30pm its very dark already. So UMEME will cash in on that because security lights are safely turned off at 7:00am while they are switched on again at 6:30pm.
