Our last Great Frontier Fall is such a great time of year here at The Joy of Travel. Every day the mail lady brings me new brochures for the upcoming year, and every day I find something in a new brochure that I really, really want to do. Take yesterday for example. My mail lady brought me a brochure for 2015 land tours in Alaska. For those of us who have experienced Alaska by cruise ship, a land tour seems like the ideal way to see the interior of that great state. Land tour companies in Alaska offer several different ways to see Alaska by land. There is independent travel where they map out the drive, arrange the passes and tickets to attractions as well as the hotel stays, and the rental car. You do the driving and are free to proceed at your own pace along the route. There are rail itineraries where you ride along in the comfort of a luxury railcar (with a glass dome, no less), and see the sights far away from the highways and byways. Then there are the luxury escorted motor coach tours, which are much like my personally escorted tours. You board a luxury motor coach, and enjoy a set itinerary along with the services of a bus driver and expert tour conductor. There are local experts at most stops, and overnight accommodations are prearranged as well many meals and baggage handling. Some of the Regional Highlights you won’t want to miss are: Denali National Park- Home to Mt. McKinley, North America’s highest mountain, offering the best opportunity to view amazing wildlife. While visiting the park keep an eye out for the big five: wolves, moose, bears, caribou and Dall sheep. A must see destination to explore while visiting Alaska. Fairbanks- Discover Alaska’s interior and step back in time to the gold rush era of Alaska’ Golden Heart City, only 200 miles from the Arctic Circle. Anchorage- Situated on beautiful Cook Inlet, Alaska’s largest city is a hub of activity. Dawson City- Turn back the clock and explore Robert Service’s cabin, Diamond Tooth Gerties and historic gold rush sites. Seward- The gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park. A perfect setting for up-close sealife viewing and glacier-carved fjords along a stunning coastline. Skagway- Explore shops along wooden sidewalks, then take a ride aboard the fame White Pass & Yukon Route railroad. Juneau- Alaska’s state capital offers a variety of adventures in a picturesque setting. Copper Center- Discover America’s largest National Park, Wrangell-St. Elias, with its towering peaks and fish for the most famous salmon in the world in the Copper River. Cooper Landing- Experience the turquoise-blue waters and abundance of salmon that make the Kenai River world famous. Talkeetna- Enjoy panoramic views of the Alaska Range from this historic village which serves as base camp for mountaineers climbing Mt. McKinley. Whitehorse- Take in the SS Klondike, a National Historic Site, the park that evokes the days when the riverboats brought virtually all goods and many newcomers into the region. Tours range from two nights to fourteen days, and if you book now I’ve seen discounts as high as $600 per person. Summer 2015 seems like the perfect time to experience Alaska, our last great frontier.
